Sacred Contracts: Awakening your Divine Potential
Caroline Myss
Harmony Books New York 2001
ISBN: 0-517-70392-0
Divine Reality: Each one of us will be tested numerous times during our lives and always at a choice point that defines our power. Best-selling author and international speaker, Caroline Myss, creates an immense addition to her work about discovering that power and following the dictates of your own true self. Her latest work, Sacred Contracts, engages you in an extensive, self-exploring expedition to unearth the core ingredients of your unique, spiritual identity. Major religious traditions, Eastern ideas about energy centers in the body, Jungian psychological archetypes, and astrology among other sources, are the context for identifying your divine purpose. Myss addresses the roots of archetypal thinking, while adding her own, unprecedented, contribution. Her detailed history as a medical intuitive and psychic who works with the archetypes creates the backdrop for a life changing experience.
Myss offers solid definitions, a fascinating list in the appendix, of archetypes, and provides workshop techniques for learning consciously with the guidance of archetypes. Sacred Contracts focuses on "what is our mission in life?" and the journey this mission may involve. The author emphasizes perception of this journey by stating, “Even though we may reach the point at which we feel that we are finally doing what we are supposed to be doing, our faith will never stop being tested, because gaining insight into our Contract does not mean we have perfected faith…we will be asked again and again to release the parts of our lives that mean the most to us. At the end of the ‘ordeal’ we will find that we have not given up anything but have instead been given much more in return.” A sacred contract is your commitment, it is your overall relationship to your personal . . . and spiritual power and a plan to help you develop your divine potential. In explaining these concepts, the book takes care to show that Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam all contain these points of view.
This is a book that can help you learn for the rest of your life. Unlike many books that are aimed at helping you find "the answer" and then moving on, Sacred Contracts is designed to be referenced in many situations. The focus remains on keeping your attention on reaching your highest potential. She clarifies with a statement on perception. “Our own flaws serve only to conceal the valuable nature of our own potential contribution to humanity. For all our egotism and narcissism, we still tend to focus more on our faults than on our capacities and promise. And yet, we all hold within us the potential for greatness and the potential to be of great service to others.”
In discovering our sacred contract, we have to do some work along the way. I hesitate to use the word “work” but really it takes some effort. We have to clear out the old stuff and surrender to potential for greatness. The exercises in this book will assist with this. They are based on a successful seminar that the author has been developing over many years. So it is intended to take quite a bit of time to do and implement. I’d suggest that you find blocks of time to work on these assignments when you will not be disturbed. I also recommend this book as a purchase, keep it for a reference piece, and use it to discover more about your journey and Sacred Contract. It is worth it…YOU are worth it!
